The grass isn’t always greener on the other side

Happy Friday, everyone! It’s Mira here and I have a life lesson for everyone that I learned very young. That’s right, I learned it the hard way that the other side isn’t as great as I thought it would be. If you haven’t heard the summary of my little adventure at 2 days old you are in for a big story.

You see here my first hour in the world was exciting. I was a rebel from the beginning; I tried getting out of the electric fence and let me tell you if you want to see a bunch of humans run around like crazy just dart for the electric fence and try to get through it. However, my escaping plan did not work at all. They sent my mother, Roxy, and I to the barn for feed and bonding time together.

Two days later, my owners had high faith in me and let my mom and I out to the pasture. Now you remember how I am a rebel? No one was around but mom and I so it was a perfect time to test my boundaries. That’s right, I was going to try that electric fence one more time.  30 minutes I was out in the pasture and that’s right everyone I escaped the pasture into the real world.

The whole Day family was walking around the pastures, down the railroad, through the town and in the bean field. My mom stood by the fence line bawling on and on all night. They all checked every hour for me. To be honest with you all, I got lost in the bean field and I was too tired after escaping the pasture. Finally, I got hungry for my mom’s milk and it was getting chilly in the bean field. Around midnight, I decided it was time to make my big appearance. I used mom’s bawling to lead me back to the fence line and just as I walked out of the bean field they found me and took me straight to the barn.

Once I got back to the barn, they put mom and I in a pen on the show calf side that connects to the weaned calf lot. Needless to say, no one trusted me to be alone anymore. After a couple of weeks, they finally let us go back on the cow side;however, I didn’t pay many visits to the pasture due to my previous adventures.

Now, I’ll admit it sure was exciting to be on my own for an evening but still it was cold, dark, and scary on the other side of the fence.Although that bean field looked greener than the pasture we grazed on it really wasn’t what I thought it would be. Without my mom to guide me I was a little calf lost and really glad  I found my way back.  I don’t highly recommend leaving your mom’s side at two days old and I say from experience that things aren’t always as great as they seem. Stay tuned for more stories!

Safely in the barn,

Mira
